Hear The Highwomen's Rewrite Of The Classic 'Highwayman'

The all-female supergroup, The Highwomen, hit the ground running a few weeks ago after releasing their debut single, "Redesigning Women." The song about expectations and challenges women face daily quickly captured the attention of many.

Since then the group, consisting of Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, and Natalie Hemby, have been unstoppable. They made their epic live debut at the Newport Folk Festival last month (July 28) performing a song noted as "the first gay country song,"If She Ever Leaves Me." They were also joined by the queen of country herself, Dolly Parton, for a special performance of a few of her hit songs like "Jolene," "Just Because I'm A Women" and "Eagle When She Flies."

Earlier this week, the group shared a new song, "Highwomen," a rework of an earlier song, "Highwayman." The 1985 song comes from the country outlaw group, The Highwaymen, consisting of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. The song was co-written by Carlile and Shires alongside one of the song's writers, Jimmy Webb.

"[The Highwaymen's characters] all died doing things that men do. Willie was a bandit. Johnny Cash drove a f****** starship, nobody knows why," Carlile shared with Rolling Stone." We rewrote it with fates that befell women: a doctor convicted of witchcraft; an immigrant who died trying to get over the border but got the kids over safe and sound; a preacher' and a freedom rider who gets shot."

"Highwomen" is the third song shared from the group's forthcoming self-titled debut album following up the release of "Crowded Table" on July 26. They also recently shared their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," a song featured on the soundtrack for the film, The Kitchen. The ladies joined Jimmy Fallon to play an acoustic rendition of the song on the Tonight Show's "Backstage Acoustic" series. Check it out below along with their new song, "Highwomen."

The Highwomen is set to drop on September 6.
