Zac Efron has finally spoken out since recovering from a deadly bacterial infection earlier this month.

On Sunday night (December 29), the Greatest Showman star took to social media with a health update following reports that the actor had battled a life-threatening illness in Papua New Guinea ahead of Christmas Day. “Very thankful to everyone who has reached out. I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks in P.N.G,” Efron tweeted along with an image of him with a group of the country’s locals. “I’m home for the holidays with my friends and family. Thanks for all the love and concern, see you in 2020!”

The Daily Mail and The Sunday Telegraph were the first outlets to break the news of Efron’s medical scare. As previously reported, the 32-year-old was filming his extreme adventure series, Killing Zac Efron, when he contracted a fatal “form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection” that prompted medical professionals to get him on a “life-or-death” flight to Brisbane’s St. Andrews War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill, Australia. Efron was “given the all clear” to fly back home to the United States by Christmas Eve after undergoing several days of treatment.

Other outlets reported Efron landed in Papua New Guinea at the beginning of December to start filming his new show, which follows the performer “going “deep into the jungle of a remote, dangerous island, falling off the grid for 21 days,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
