Russell Dickerson Blended An Iconic 80s Nod Into His Electrifying Anthem

Russell Dickerson nodded to Cyndi Lauper’s iconic 80s anthem in the electrifying single he released on Friday (February 21).

Dickerson teamed up with Chase McGill, Jessie Jo Dillon and Chris LaCorte to write “Happen To Me,” a vibrant country-pop song that “capture(s) the excitement and carefree vibe of a spontaneous night out,” reads a press release. Dickerson references Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” as he tells a story through the “infectious lyrics” about meeting someone new on the dance floor.

“‘Happen To Me’ is all about dancing through heartbreak,” Dickerson said in a statement. “When we first started writing, I thought, ‘What’s a song that makes every girl want to get up and dance when it plays?’ So we kicked off the chorus with ‘Girls just want to have fun,’ and kept building from there.”

“Happen To Me” is the latest anthem to release from Dickerson since “Bones,” a ballad that serves as a romantic tribute to his wife. The singer-songwriter’s newest anthem adds to a growing list of career-spanning hits, including “Love You Like I Used To,” “God Gave Me A Girl,” “Blue Tacoma,” “Yours,” “Home Sweet” and more.
